Ernst Pleased With Passing Of Bioengineered Food Labeling Bill
As a member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst says she is pleased to see the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard signed into law. The bipartisan legislation creates a national standard for labeling of food containing biotechnology ingredients. Enrst says this will provide clarity to our farmers, food manufacturers and consumers and will ensure access to safe, affordable foods through products that are critical to Iowa’s food economy. The law will implement mandatory labeling requirements within two years with options of text, symbol or electronic links. Meat poultry and egg products are exempt from the labeling requirements if they are the main ingredient. Additionally, the law prohibits any food product from an animal to be classified as a biotechnology ingredient solely because the animal may have eaten food with biotechnology ingredients.
