Two veterans were recognized Saturday afternoon during a medal ceremony held at Iowa Central Community College.
U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, presented the medals on behalf of the United States government.
The family of U.S. Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Charles Hugh Harrison attended. Harrison served from 1943 to 1946 as a motor machinist mate on the USS Martin DE30 Destroyer Escort. The vessel served to provide escort services to merchant ships and convoys. It also saw service in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.
Harrison’s family accepted the Navy Combat Action Ribbon, American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with one Bronze Service Star Attachment, World War II Victory Medal, U.S. Navy Honorable Discharge Button and the Honorable Service Lapel Pin.
Vietnam War United States Army veteran James “Jim” Gill, of Fort Dodge, served from 1968 to 1971 as a supply sergeant. He was stationed in Tay Ninh and Long Binh. He was assigned to the 548 Light Maintenance Company.
Gill accepted the Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Republic of
Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Device and the Marksman Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle M-14 bar.
