'We are going to make 'em squeal': Sen. Ernst introduces SQUEAL Act

(KWWL) - "Washington's full of big spenders, let's make 'em squeal." That's what Joni Ernst said in an election ad for the Iowa Senate race back in 2014.

During her victory speech, Ernst said "We are heading to Washington, and we are going to make 'em squeal!" Nearly 3 years later, Senator Ernst has introduced the SQUEAL Act.

The bill, also known as the Stop Questionable, Unnecessary, and Excessive Allowances for Legislators Act, would cut perks for elected officials. It would eliminate a provision of the tax code that allows members of Congress to deduct up to $3,000 in D.C.-based living expenses from their income taxes each year.

"To achieve the ultimate goal of lowering tax rates for hardworking families and businesses, Congress is going to have to eliminate various loopholes and deductions in our outdated tax code," said Senator Ernst. "Congress should lead by example and offer up its own unnecessary tax break."
