During COVID-19, Ernst Continues to Fight for Iowa’s Biofuels Community

RED OAK, Iowa—U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), a relentless advocate for Iowa’s biofuels community, is continuing to fight for farmers and producers during the coronavirus pandemic. After pushing to bolster the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) in the bipartisan Phase 3 relief package Congress passed, Ernst is now requesting additional funds be allocated to the biofuels industry through the program. In case you missed it, Ernst’s efforts were covered by a number of outlets.

The Atlantic News Telegraph said, in part:

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, along with her Iowa colleague, Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), and 11 of her Senate colleagues today sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requesting additional funds be provided to the biofuel industry through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) – which was bolstered by the bipartisan Phase 3 relief package Congress passed – during the unprecedented economic circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO Radio highlighted the bipartisan letter Ernst sent to Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue saying:

“The bi-partisan group of senators wants additional funds to be allocated to the biofuels industry thru the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) during the unprecedented economic circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. ‘As the country follows the advice of local and state governments and remain at home, motor fuel use has rapidly decreased… The decrease in fuel consumption has left production facilities little choice but to idle production or close completely,’ the senators wrote in a letter to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue.

The senator’s efforts have been widely praised by biofuels leaders. Biomass Magazine, a leading industry news magazine, noted their praise:

’Once again, renewable fuel champions in the Senate are working tirelessly to stand up for an industry that is vitally important to rural America,’ said Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association. ‘We thank them for recognizing the unprecedented challenges facing ethanol producers today and seeking solutions to help our industry weather this storm.’”
