Ernst Names Small Business of the Week, Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery

Throughout this Congress, Ranking Member Ernst plans to recognize a small business in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties.

RED OAK, Iowa – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Ranking Member of the Senate Small Business Committee, today announced her Small Business of the Week: Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery of Boone County. Throughout this Congress, Ranking Member Ernst plans to recognize a small business in every one of Iowa’s 99 counties.

“Iowa’s Main Street small businesses are the backbone of our local economies and keep small town traditions at the center of their work! The Van Hemerts have poured over three decades of diligence into their bakery, and I’m proud to see them preserve their Dutch heritage, reaching satisfied customers locally and beyond,” said Ranking Member Ernst.

Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery was founded by husband and wife duo Denny and Terri Van Hemert in 1983. The bakery’s motto is, “A Little Dutch in the Heart of Iowa,” and today the business is a full-line scratch bakery famous for their best-selling item, the Dutch Letter. The bakery was named by the Iowa State Daily in 2016 and 2017 as the student choice best bakery and was recognized nationally, placing 5th in the Dawn Food’s America’s Sweetest Bakery competition in 2017.

Stay tuned as Ranking Member Ernst recognizes more Iowa small businesses across the state with her Small Business of the Week award.
