WASHINGTON—U.S Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), a former company commander during Operation Iraqi Freedom and ranking member on the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Emerging Threats and Capabilities, questioned Acting Assistant Secretary for Defense of Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, David Helvey, and Deputy Director of Politico-Military Affairs (Middle East), Brigadier General Matthew Trollinger, on the Biden Administration’s plans to withdrawal from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021.

Assessment of Terrorist Threat from Afghanistan
Ernst pressed Acting Assistant Secretary Helvey for his assessment on our adversaries’ ability to conduct attacks on America from bases in Afghanistan once we withdrawal—and said that the threat has been significantly reduced because of the United States presence in the country.
Dangers to Afghan Women
Ernst spoke on her 2019 visit to Afghanistan—where she met with Afghan women who were being trained for both clerical positions and military positions—and voiced her concern about their safety following the United States troop withdrawal.
