Ernst: Prioritize Safety of Americans Over Illegal Immigrants

Honors Sarah Root Eight Years After Her Death

WASHINGTON – After the Biden administration’s policies incentivized the highest month of illegal immigrant crossings on record, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) called for U.S. law to prioritize the safety of Americans over illegal immigrants and highlighted her renewed efforts to pass Sarah’s Law.

Ernst honored Sarah Root, a 21-year-old Iowan killed by an illegal immigrant driving drunk eight years ago today. Ernst introduced Sarah’s Law after her killer was released and never faced justice due to a gap in federal law.

Background:

Sarah’s Law amends the mandatory detention provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act to require U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants criminally charged with killing or seriously injuring another person. It also adds a requirement that upon encountering an illegal immigrant subject to mandatory detention, ICE makes reasonable efforts to identify victims and inform their families of certain information.
