Ernst Questions Supreme Court Nominee Judge Barrett at Judiciary Committee Hearing
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA), one of the first female Republicans to serve on the Senate Judiciary Committee, questioned Judge Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump’s nominee to be the next Associate Justice on the United States Supreme Court, at today’s committee hearing.

First Amendment
Ernst introduced for the record a coalition letter from 66 pro-life organizations—representing a range of groups from Susan B. Anthony List to Secular Pro-Life—that have expressed their support for Judge Barrett as a “jurist who rightly leaves politics to politicians and legislating to legislators.”
The senator asked Judge Barrett about how she relied on controlling precedent in her ruling of Price v. City of Chicago, a case about “buffer zone” ordinances around abortion facilities.
Waters of the United States (WOTUS) Rule and Ethanol
Ernst asked Judge Barrett to share her views on federal agency rulemaking, noting the Waters of the United States (WOTUS) rule. The senator also questioned Judge Barrett about the 10th Circuit’s decision in Renewable Fuels Association v. EPA regarding small refinery exemptions and how agencies should interpret the laws passed by Congress.
