Ernst, Smith Renew Call for National Women in Agriculture Day

Senator Ernst grew up on a family farm in Southwest Iowa and serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.), joined by a bipartisan group of their senate colleagues and every single female senator, are calling for the designation of March 23, 2023, as Women in Agriculture Day. In celebration of Women’s History Month and National Agriculture Week, Ernst, who grew up on a family farm in Southwest Iowa and serves on the Senate Agriculture Committee, is highlighting the vital role women play in agriculture operations and industry.

“Women play a vital role in every sector of American agriculture. In Iowa, women lead farm operations, educate the next generation of leaders, engage in research, and serve as advocates for the industry,” said Senator Ernst. “As a farmer’s daughter and rural Iowan who grew up walking beans and feeding hogs, I’m proud to lead every woman in the Senate in a celebration of all women in agriculture.”

“Agriculture is the backbone of Minnesota’s diverse economy,” said Senator Smith. “Women have always played an essential role in this sector, and I’m proud we have introduced this bipartisan effort to set aside a day during Women’s History Month and National Agriculture Week where we step back and recognize the women who have been central to our agricultural achievements and success.”

Last year the resolution to designate March 23, 2022, as Women in Agriculture Day was unanimously adopted by the Senate.
