ICYMI: Ernst Pushes to Prevent More Tax Dollars from Going to China’s Wuhan Lab

Three years after a mysterious new disease emerged in the vicinity of the Wuhan Institute of Virology – where U.S. taxpayer dollars were funding dangerous experiments on coronaviruses – the lab is still eligible to receive U.S. tax dollars.

WASHINGTON – This week, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) continued her push to expose dangerous experiments conducted by Communist China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) with the support of U.S. taxpayer dollars—despite the biolab’s serious documented safety concerns and known connections to the Chinese military.

WIV has refused to provide key information about the dangerous experiments that were paid for by Dr. Fauci, according to an investigation by the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office of Inspector General (OIG) that Senator Ernst requested. While the OIG recommended that HHS consider blacklisting the lab for its lack of compliance, the Biden administration has yet to take action to do so.

In addition to leading a letter to the Biden administration’s HHS calling for immediate action, Senator Ernst also introduced legislation to permanently debar WIV from receiving U.S. funding.

The Epoch Times reported on Ernst’s work to call out the misuse of taxpayer funds: "The Iowa Republican gave Becerra and HHS her latest “Squeal Award”—a monthly recognition that singles out a Washington expense, program, or concept that has proven to be wasteful and must be cut—after they failed to act on the recommendation of the department’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) that the Chinese lab where the coronavirus is thought to have originated be permanently removed from eligibility for federal funds.”

The Daily Wire highlighted NIH’s lack of transparency: “Yet even after the COVID outbreak, and despite EcoHealth breaking rules including failing to properly report its subcontracts and allegedly not notifying NIH of troubling test results, NIH has given EcoHealth more awards.”

The Washington Times reported on Ernst’s comments demanding that the improperly spent taxpayer dollars be returned: “The audit did not say the lab was responsible for the spread of the coronavirus or how American taxpayer money was used. Indeed, one of its findings is that EcoHealth and the Wuhan lab have been unable to say exactly what happened at the lab, since China has now cut off communications about the events. Ms. Ernst said HHS should ask EcoHealth to repay the tax dollars misspent on unallowable costs.”
