On Read Across America Day, Ernst Joins Preschoolers in Bettendorf to Read “What Pet Should I Get?”
The senator read the Dr. Seuss book to Iowa preschoolers at Hand-in-Hand of the Quad Cities.
WASHINGTON—Today, on National Read Across America Day, U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) joined preschoolers at Hand-in-Hand of the Quad Cities in Bettendorf, Iowa to read Dr. Seuss’s book, “What Pet Should I Get?”

Read Across America
National Read Across America Day, which coincides with Dr. Seuss’s birthday, is recognized on March 2nd every year to celebrate and encourage the gift of reading across the United States. The event is led by the National Education Association (NEA) as part of their Read Across America initiative.
Launched in 1998 by the NEA and guided by a committee of educators, NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone.
Hand-in-Hand of the Quad Cities
In 2000, two sets of parents from the Quad Cities agreed that they wanted their children who had disabilities to have the same opportunities for fun and learning as typically developing children. They decided to start by offering a one week summer camp for children with disabilities, where they could enjoy a full camp experience.
Over the last 20 years, Hand in Hand’s programs have expanded from one summer camp in July, to over 15 year round programs, including integrated child care and preschool programs, school age children respite programs, and evening and weekend programs.
