WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) issued the following statement after the United States Supreme Court overturned the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals decision in the case of Obergefell v. Hodges. The ruling struck down states’ bans on same-sex marriage and refusal to recognize marriages performed in other states as a violation of a couple's Fourteenth Amendment rights.
"I am disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision and its failure to recognize the freedom of our states to make their own decisions about their respective marriage laws.
“While it is my personal belief that marriage is between one man and one woman, I maintain that this is an issue best handled at the state level."
